Fluorescent Lighting: The End of An Era

Written by our Strategic Partners at Voss Lighting
Let's take a stroll down memory lane to 1938 when General Electric made a groundbreaking move by introducing fluorescent tubes to the world. Even though the technology had been brewing since the late 1880s, it took time and the genius of several inventors to make it shine as a practical product. Fast forward almost a century, and guess what? The fluorescent bulb is preparing to bid us farewell, but in a brighter way.
Starting this year, a global wave of change is sweeping in, as countries unite to bid adieu to the old-school fluorescent bulbs we've grown accustomed to. But don't worry, change is exciting! Here's the scoop on what's happening:
- The European Union's RoHS directive (2011/65/EU) is leading the charge. As of August 1, 2023, it's saying "lights out" to the sale of linear fluorescents.
- Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is joining the party by halting the sale of linear fluorescent bulbs from September 1, 2023.
- Canada is getting in on the action too. The government has plans to phase out mercury-containing bulbs' production and import by December 31, 2023, followed by a wholesale ban after December 31, 2026.
- In the United States, California is spearheading the change with Assembly Bill No. 2208. Starting January 1, 2024, compact fluorescent screw or bayonet base products are a no-go, and from January 1, 2025, pin-base type compact and linear fluorescents are also out.
- Following California's lead, other states like Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, and more are jumping on the bandwagon. They're proposing similar bans between January 1, 2024, and January 1, 2025. And some states have already put their foot down on certain fluorescent bulb types to encourage the adoption of energy-efficient LEDs.
- Even the U.S. Department of Energy is considering a nationwide ban similar to California's. Details are still under wraps, but keep your eyes peeled.
No matter where you're based, this shift is shaking up the U.S. market. Fluorescent prices are getting a little makeover, rising by 40%–50%, and the options on the shelves are becoming more selective. This is your cue to look into modern, energy-efficient alternatives that not only light up your space but also save you money and hassle.
Curious about how to light up your future in a fluorescent-free world? Give Randy Herrick a shout at 402-850-9789 with Voss Lighting. They've got branches all over the U.S. ready to shed light on your way forward. Embrace the change, and let's brighten up the future together before fluorescents become ancient history!
